CBA’s Chess Club continues to grow! Thanks to our continued partnership with Hampton Roads Chess Association, this is the second season of the extracurricular offering.

“We work with students to learn the basic chess rules, chess terminology, opening principles, basic tactics, basic checkmate patterns, calculations, defense, and more. Students receive formal instruction and plenty of practice time supervised by the coach. We are thrilled to be able to serve the students of CBA.” – Coach Mike

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, HRCA’s mission is to bring the life benefits of chess to people of all ages and abilities throughout our region. Chess is proven to improve focus, impulse control, planning and organizing, decision-making, problem solving, calculation, pattern recognition, resiliency, critical and creative thinking, and more. Chess levels the playing field for players with disabilities, and the type of students who attend CBA have the gift of brains uniquely and perfectly wired for chess.
While they may struggle to overcome challenges in other areas of school and life designed for neurotypical individuals, neurodivergence is an asset in chess. Students find they can excel at the game, which greatly boosts their self-esteem and self-confidence.
Thanks to Coach Mike and everyone at HRCA!
