  • Middle School Wilderness Survival Class

Students in Ms. Miner’s language arts class have been participating in an in-depth novel study of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.

The main character of the novel, Brian, is stranded in the Canadian wilderness and must learn to survive using limited supplies and knowledge.

“We invited a ranger from First Landing State Park to visit our class and present a wilderness survival program. Students learned how to build a fire, weave yucca leaves into cords, and construct a fishing net from string,” explains Ms. Miner. The ranger also gave some valuable information about animal identification, plant identification, and how to properly prepare for outdoor adventures.

Thanks to our innovative faculty and support from the community, CBA students are prepared for life inside, and outside of their comfort zones!
