Storybook Biomes

Kendrick and Evelyn present their Storybook Biomes project
Middle school students created Biomes based on the main characters of popular picture books. To start, the group identified the organisms in Crabby and Nabby as an exploration of the Chesapeake Bay. Students then worked with their partners to read their selected book, identify the main organism, and build ecosystems and biomes.
This project focused on building literacy in students by applying scientific vocabulary to something (picture books) that they typically wouldn’t think of in a scientific manner. Students used terms including biome, biotic, abiotic, organism, population, community to describe the interactions between various organisms and non-living factors.
Well done, middle school scientists!
