  • AI in the Classroom: Opening Doors While Teaching Responsibility

We’ve discovered that artificial intelligence isn’t just a shiny new tech tool—it’s a game changer for students with learning differences. For years, as teachers we searched for ways to make higher-level reading accessible to students who are still working on foundational skills. Now, with AI, we can do just that. Gone are the days of reading “The Cat Sat” as a middle schooler. With AI, now we can take any text and make it ability level accessible for all students in the class.

Need a passage that matches a student’s reading level but still covers the same rich content as the rest of the class? AI can create it in seconds. Need individualized checklists, study guides, or visual charts tailored to one student’s learning style? Done. It’s like having an assistant who knows every student’s needs and can whip up the exact resource you’re imagining. AI allows us to target interventions with precision, and for many students, that means they can finally access material in a way that works for them.

But like any powerful tool, AI comes with its challenges. One of the trickiest parts is helping students understand the line between using AI and relying on it. It’s tempting, SO TEMPTING to just ask it to write your essay or solve every math problem for you. The problem? That robs students of the chance to think, grow, and take pride in their own work.

This year, we are working hard to guide our students toward responsible AI use. We’re building their confidence, praising their original efforts, and reminding them that their own thinking is already awesome. AI isn’t here to replace that, it’s here to enhance it. The goal is for our students to see AI not as a shortcut, but as a partner in their learning journey.

When used with integrity, AI can open more doors than we ever imagined. And we’re excited to keep exploring just how far those doors can lead.
