Dr. Shantanu Tilak Receives American Society for Cybernetics Award

Congratulations to Dr. Shantanu Tilak, Director of the Center for Educational Research and Technological Innovation (CERTI) at Chesapeake Bay Academy, for receiving the Heinz von Foerster Award from the American Society for Cybernetics (ASC). The ASC offers awards to cyberneticians new to the field who have made significant contributions to the research. Dr. Tilak was recognized for his effort in creating participatory classrooms mediated by technology. He has applied his theoretical framework to his work with students and teachers at CBA, designing professional development and research to measure the effectiveness of instructional technologies used in our classrooms.

Dr. Tilak completed his PhD in Educational Psychology at The Ohio State University. His work there focused on combining informal Internet-influenced learning and formal classroom environments, allowing students to acquire the skills for critical Internet navigation.
CBA’s Head of School, Dr. Judy Jankowski says of Dr. Tilak:

The mission of CERTI is to develop, evaluate, and disseminate innovative programs and practices utilizing learner-centered technology in partnership with institutions of higher education and the K-12 community, at large. CERTI’s current project is the design and build out of the CadetNet curriculum, which will expand CBA’s influence on the virtual realm, incorporating virtual reality and AI into our online curriculum.
