  • CadetNet Virtual Academy FAQs

CadetNet Virtual Academy, created by Chesapeake Bay Academy, combines evidence-based instruction, immersive technology, and personalized support to meet the needs of diverse learners in a flexible virtual environment. Below are answers to some of the most common questions families ask about the program.

Does CadetNet provide special education services?

Yes. CadetNet Virtual Academy was developed to provide evidence-based virtual instruction for neurodiverse learners and students with unique learning needs. While the program strongly supports students with IEPs and learning differences such as ADHD, ASD, and SLD, it is not exclusively a special education program. Admission requires an IEP and/or psychoeducational evaluation, along with prior school records.

What curriculum does CadetNet use?

CadetNet’s curriculum was developed by experienced CBA educators and aligns with Common Core and state Standards of Learning. Students receive instruction in Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies using the same multisensory and differentiated teaching methods used in CBA’s on-campus program.

How does VR support learning in CadetNet?

Virtual reality (VR) enhances instruction by allowing students to actively experience concepts taught in the curriculum. Students may explore ecosystems in Science, practice graphing concepts in Math, visit historical civilizations in Social Studies, or interact with literary settings in Language Arts. These immersive experiences help make learning more engaging, interactive, and memorable.

How does CadetNet protect student data and ensure VR environments are secure?

CadetNet uses a proprietary headset management system along with a dedicated school VR server to ensure student data remains secure. Students cannot use headsets to browse the internet independently. All VR experiences take place under teacher supervision, and incomplete VR projects can be safely saved and continued during future class sessions.

What fees do families pay for VR equipment?

CadetNet offers flexible options for VR headset access. Families may either rent equipment or purchase a headset through the program for a fee of $325, depending on the enrollment agreement selected. Loaned headsets must be returned fully intact and functional in order to receive a deposit refund.

If my child is overseas, how will scheduling work?

CadetNet currently serves students in the United States on an Eastern Standard Time schedule from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For students located overseas, additional class times may be scheduled based on enrollment demand. If enough students require earlier or later instruction times, CadetNet can create cohorts aligned to those time zone needs.

Can my child enroll mid-year or mid-semester?

Yes. CadetNet accepts students on a rolling basis throughout the year. Families are required to submit IEP/504 documentation and/or psychoeducational testing results to the enrollment manager so the team can determine whether the program is an appropriate fit for the student.

What software and hardware are required to run ENGAGE VR?

CadetNet’s VR software is cross-platform and can run on Meta Quest headsets provided by the school, as well as on Windows or Mac computers with an Intel Core i5 processor or equivalent. Chromebooks are also supported, and the software can be downloaded directly from the Google Play Store.
