  • How Reading Intervention Changes Lives

A recent PBS article, Why Reading Aloud to Kids Helps Them Thrive, highlights the powerful impact of reading aloud. Shared reading strengthens language development, builds vocabulary and comprehension, and fosters empathy and emotional growth. Researchers have even called it “the single most important activity” for preparing children to become successful readers.

For many children, those nightly stories spark a lifelong love of reading. But for students with language-based learning differences, including dyslexia, becoming confident readers often requires more than shared story time. It requires specialized instruction, individualized support, and evidence-based reading interventions that help unlock each child’s full potential.

At Chesapeake Bay Academy, we know that while reading aloud nurtures a love of books, specialized reading intervention helps students unlock the skills they need to read independently and confidently. Our evidence-based approach provides explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written language, meeting each student where they are and helping them make meaningful progress.

The impact reaches far beyond academics. When students become confident readers, they gain access to new opportunities. They participate more fully in classroom discussions, approach challenges with greater resilience, and begin to see themselves as capable learners. Families often share that the greatest milestone isn’t just a higher reading score, it’s hearing their child ask to read a book independently or seeing them discover the joy of a favorite story for the first time.

This transformation is possible because of a community that believes every child deserves the opportunity to succeed. Chesapeake Bay Academy provides specialized reading instruction, innovative learning resources, and highly trained educators who understand how students with language-based learning differences learn best. The generosity of our community makes it possible for students who struggle to read to receive the expert, individualized instruction they need to overcome challenges, build lasting confidence, and become successful, independent readers.

Thank you for making this work possible.
