  • Amy Newmeyer, M.D. on Options for ADHD Medication Management: Rx and OTC/Natural Treatments

CBA was pleased to welcome back Amy Newmeyer, M.D., developmental pediatrician at CHKD, as a breakout session speaker at our 4th Annual ADHD Symposium. This marked Dr. Newmeyer’s second time presenting at our annual event made possible through a partnership with Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CKHD).

Dr. Newmeyer is a medical doctor for Developmental Pediatrics at CHKD providing consultations for the evaluation, diagnosis and management of children with developmental disabilities. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and Neurodevelopmental Disability. She obtained her medical degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine, conducted her residency work at Akron Children’s Hospital and completed her fellowship work at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Coastal Virginia Magazine awarded her “Top Doc” in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and we are now pleased to share her presentation on “Options for ADHD Medication Management: Rx and OTC/Natural Treatments” with our community.

Dr. Newmeyer’s presentation covers the prevalence fo ADHD, different levels of evidence of therapies, options for prescription medications, alternative and complementary medicine and lists the various alternative and complementary therapies used to treat ADHD. Included are reasons one would consider treatment and how to determine what is good information when exploring options. Dr. Newmeyer’s presentation covers stimulants, both methylphenidates and amphetamines, as well as alph-2 adrenergic agonists, Intuniv (clonidine) and Kapvay (guanfacine), and Strattera (atomoxetine). In addition, Newmeyer explains complementary medicine and interventions and provides questions for one to ask about any alternative treatment they may be considering. Coaching, cognitive behavioral therapy, neurofeedback, sensory processing therapy, the usage of supplements (fish oil, vitamin and mineral, herbal) and dietary changes are covered in this comprehensive look at available treatments.
