Exploring the Scientific Method Through a Virtual Lab

Science came to life for Ms. Olsen’s students as they explored the scientific method and the five senses through a virtual laboratory experience.

As part of their learning, students explored a variety of scientific tools and considered how scientists use different tools to observe, investigate, and understand the world around them. The virtual lab gave students a hands-on way to practice identifying tools and thinking about how they might be used during scientific investigations.

Of all the tools they explored, the virtual compass quickly became a class favorite! Students enjoyed discovering how this simple tool can help scientists navigate and determine direction.

• How did you use your five senses to make observations during the virtual lab?
• If you were a scientist investigating something outside, which tools would you choose, and why?

Activities like this give students the opportunity to take scientific concepts beyond the page and experience what it means to think, observe, question, and explore like a scientist.
