Mission in Action: Reflections on the Opening Weeks

As we settle into the rhythm of the school year, I’ve been reflecting on how different it feels to experience Chesapeake Bay Academy with our students fully back on campus.

Over the summer, much of our work centered on preparing—learning together, strengthening systems, building relationships, and thinking carefully about the experience we want to create for our students and families. Now, as I spend time throughout all three divisions, I have the privilege of seeing that preparation come to life.

And what I am seeing is worth celebrating.

I see students engaged in learning, often with smiles on their faces. I see teachers who are prepared, purposeful, and deeply invested in their students. I also see educators learning alongside them—asking questions, collaborating with colleagues, reflecting on what is working, and continually refining their approach.

That combination matters. A learning organization should be filled with learners—not only the young people in our classrooms, but also the adults responsible for creating the conditions in which they can thrive.

Last week’s Parent Preview Night offered families an opportunity to experience that work firsthand. Parents and guardians walked in their students’ footsteps, moving through classrooms, meeting teachers, experiencing elements of their children’s learning, and gaining a deeper understanding of what a day at CBA looks and feels like.

It was also an important reminder of how essential the school-home partnership is. The more families understand our approach—and the more we understand their children—the stronger that partnership becomes.

At opening orientation, returning families spoke about CBA as a place where learning is designed with each student’s individual profile in mind. New families shared hopes that their children would reengage with learning, experience success, build confidence, and perhaps even rediscover a love of learning.

Several weeks into the school year, I am beginning to see those aspirations taking shape across our classrooms.

Personalized, engaged learning does not happen by accident. It requires preparation, expertise, strong relationships, reflection, flexibility, and a willingness to continually ask: What does this student need to learn and thrive?

 As I reflect on these opening weeks, what stays with me most is the pattern I see emerging across CBA:

Students engaged in learning.
Educators teaching and learning alongside them.
Families connected to the experience.
Colleagues supporting one another.
A community continually working to get better for the students we serve.

That is our mission in action.

Thank you to our students, families, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends for the many ways you contribute to the life of Chesapeake Bay Academy. Opening a school year is never the work of one person, one team, or one division. It is the product of hundreds of acts of preparation, care, patience, partnership, and belief in what is possible for our students.

Excellence is built together. Thank you for continuing to learn, evolve, and make waves together—in service of our students, families, and one another.
