Students Explore, Create, and Discover at Norfolk Botanical Garden
Middle School students spent a day exploring, discovering, and creating at Norfolk Botanical Garden. The day opened with an educational program on water quality led by garden staff. Students worked as environmental scientists, testing water samples, measuring pH levels, and learning what water quality reveals about an ecosystem’s health. It’s a timely lesson for those of us who live in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
After the guided program, students split into three groups for activities that tied science to art and creative expression:
- Garden Detectives investigated plant adaptations, compared different habitats, and used their observations to draw conclusions about the natural world.
- Plein Air Artists worked en plein air, painting outdoors like the Impressionists. Their watercolors captured the colors, shapes, and beauty of the gardens.
- Creative Writers slowed down to notice the sights, sounds, and textures around them, then turned those observations into descriptive writing and poetry.
The trip brought classroom learning to life and encouraged curiosity, creativity, and an appreciation for nature. Students also enjoyed time together outdoors at one of our community’s most beautiful places. Many thanks to our teachers, staff, and parent chaperones for making this such a meaningful and memorable day!
Dinner Table Talk
- What did the water samples tell you about the garden’s ecosystem health? What do you think affects the water quality near our home?
- Which plant adaptation surprised you most, and how does it help the plant survive where it grows?
- If you painted or wrote about one spot in the garden, what would it be, and why did you choose it?
