  • Chesapeake Bay Academy Moves to Yass Prize Semifinalist Round

Chesapeake Bay Academy (CBA) has moved ahead in the prestigious Yass Prize competition, now one of 32 educational innovators moving one step closer to the $1 million grand prize. The Yass Prize is considered to be the “Pulitzer of Education Innovation”, and is focused on the STOP Principles of Education: Sustainable, Transformational, Outstanding and Permissionless. The Yass Foundation will distribute $20 million in total prize money in 2023. To learn more about the Yass Prize, click here.

“The importance of CBA’s inclusion in this esteemed group of educational pioneers cannot be overstated. We are in the center of a conversation about the future of education – what it will look like, how it will be delivered, who will engage in the process – all of these are open questions. Even the question of the purpose of education in the 21st century is evolving. CBA is proud to have a place at the table in this important conversation,” says Judy Jankowski, Head of School.

As CBA moves to the next round in the competition, the school will receive $200,000 to support the development of a virtual learning program designed for neurodiverse students. The plan is to begin with a pilot program uniquely designed with the needs of children from military families in mind.

“It’s not okay to stay in one place,” said Jeanne Allen, Founder of the Center for Education Reform, to the attendees of the Yass Summit and Celebration at the Cleveland Museum of Art on October 10th. “We have to go farther faster. We want to ensure that all of you get not just what you need to survive but to thrive.”

More than 2,000 applicants nationwide, from a wide range of educational settings and the virtual landscape, entered the 2023 Yass Prize competition. Chesapeake Bay Academy was among the 64 educational programs selected as quarterfinalists, and is now proudly one of 32 programs in the semi-finalist round. In the next round, eight finalists will be announced to receive $500,000. The competition will conclude in December with the winner receiving a $1 million grand prize. Stay tuned!
